Media Madness by Kanakrekha

The foremost duty of the media is to INFORM, EDUCATE AND ENTERTAIN people. This picture in the local newspaper prompted me to write about the utter disregard or any sense of respect the media has for our police.

Policeman being manhandled

It left me flummoxed as to what message this rag of a newspaper is trying to impart to the citizens? Does it want to announce to the world that – “look, our police is so completely impotent, that even a senior officer can be made to bite dust in a scuffle with a rioter “!  What confidence will anyone have in the force after having seen such a picture?

This is just a single point in study to assess how   irresponsibly the media works now!

Whether it's the print or the electronic media, it is the TRP that makes their world go round. If the news is about SRK's or Ashvarya's birthday, all TV channels go berserk reporting about it.

However when some time   back, the Naxalites gunned down 15 policemen in an ambush in Maharashtra, it was not an ordinary incident but still it didn't affect most of us including the media and the masses. All of these slain policemen lived in harsh conditions in jungles, amid deadly mosquitoes, and without the comforts of city life.

No interviews with their family members appeared on TV or in the print. Do you think these policemen will get any posthumous rewards or medals? I very much doubt.

No demand for honours was raised from any section.
They lost their lives fighting the Maoists who are fighting the Indian state and want to overthrow the government to establish the 'people's republic'. But there was no outrage. I don't know the reason why this massacre didn't get due attention.

Our police is mostly armed with old weapons and have to save themselves not just from the bullet that can be fired from anywhere in the jungle.
There are also landmines to be considered, be it the jungles of Bengal or the mountains of Kashmir that can blow up anytime. These policemen fight for this nation and do not carry sophisticated arms like the ones provided to the – NSG/SPG or say - encounter specialists in Delhi or Bombay.

But when these policemen, who are our first line of defence, die, the media is not to be seen anywhere close except probably to print a picture in this undignified manner!

They live in sub human conditions in the police lines, away from their families, working long hours and on a salary which is peanuts when one compares it to any developed nation.

The print and electronic media have become an essential part of our lives and hence enjoy a magnitude of the importance as never before.

However in this scenario, media should have a greater responsibility and accountability than ever before! For in absence of the two, media will only end up harming the society.

That media is controlled more by its monetary motivation is a well known truth. In the list of oldest professions if I could add a third one following that of prostitutes and lawyers, it would definitely be the media today!

They can make or break a person/actor/politician/a corporate house, it's an endless list.

So much so that they have completely forgotten the basic manners and courtesy even while addressing senior politicians/ educationists etc. Very often news readers, just out of masscom courses, in designer executive suits, address, Ex Pm as “Bajpayi decides to stay back”! As though he was her classmate who did not turn up for her party! Or Sheila bans use of plastic. It wasn't a many years ago that an appropriate title was used to address people, but then like McDonalds, all things Americans need to be imitated.

.

We know why our traffic situation is so chaotic. There simply aren't enough policemen to control the traffic. And there isn't enough to hire and pay anymore policemen for we are 'broke'!

We have one of the lowest police to population ratio -one policeman per thousand people when in most European countries; this ratio is almost three policemen to a thousand people. Even this inadequate ratio for India is declining over the years and hence the percentage of cases investigated by the police is declining steadily. They are also a highly stressed lot. An indication is the growing number of suicides amongst the policemen. But we the people never cease to demand more and more.

Media should use its powers in a judicial and impartial manner and not bring down people, organizations even the state, and of course the forces who work for us against all odds. And more importantly exhibit some sensitivity towards our forces as well as common people and VIPs! Must say it is a great equalizer, it doesn't discriminate in pulling anyone down!!

ANEET NOT EVERYONE ENJOYS 'THE HINDU' EDITORIAL YET THE MEDIA CAN DOLE OUT SOME STUFF THAT IS A BALANCED MIX OF EDUCATION AND INFO.
FOR THAT MATTER THE DOORSHAN HAS SOME GOOD PROGRAMS, LIKE THE LOKSABAHA CHANNEL WHR THEY HOLD TALKS ABOUT WRITERS, EDUCATIONISTS, NGOs, SINGERS - A WIDE SPECTRUM OF SHOWS WHICH ARE ENTERTAINING TOO!
BUT I DONT SEE ANYONE AS OF NOW SPURNING AWAY THESE B-GRADE PROGRAMS OR YELLOW JOURNALISM
MEDIA IS PROMPT IN GLORIFYING THE CRICKETERS AND AFT ONE LOST MATCH THEY BRING THEM DOWN. SAME WITH POLITICAL PARTIES TOO.
THEY JUST LOVE TO SHRED DIGNITARIES AND OUR FORCES AT THEIR WHIM FOR THEY ARE AWARE OF THE POWER THEY ENJOY.

THEY HAVE TO REMAIN POSITIVE AND INFUSE A SENSE OF PRIDE IN WHA GOOD IS HAPPENING IN THE COUNTRY AND NOT JUST KEEP HARPING ABT'WHO IS IN THE WRONG'.

DURGESH YOU PIK ANY INDUSTRY ANY PRODUCT THAT NEEDS TO BE 'SOLD', THE TRAGET AUDIENCE IS THE MAIN CONCERN FOR PROMOTING IT.
SO WE HAVE TO BEAR IN MIND THAT IN INDIA, WHR MOST OF THE POPULATION IS ELOW YTHE AGE OF 30 YRS, THE TARGET AUDIENCE IS MORE GULLIBLE, MORE EASILY LURED TO BUY THRO SENSATIONALISM.
ALSO WE AS A NATION ARE STILL QUITE IMMATURED. WE GET CARRIED AWAY BY MELODRAMA. SO THE MATURED, EDUCATED VIEWER IS THE ONE WHO SUFFERES. CANT DO MUCH ABT IT I GUESS.

VENKAT VERY TRUE, THE OTHER DAY WHEN INDIA LOST THE 4TH ODI MATCH TO AUS, ALL CHANNELS TELECAST IT AS THE MAIN NEWS, WHILE KODA GOT AWAY AS AN AFTER THOUGHT! ENTERTANMENT TAKES PRIORITY.

KIRAN, ITS ALL ABOUT
JO DIKHTA HAI WO BIKTA HAI :(

We the people of india are obsessed with celebrities. be it cricketers or film stars.we just love to walk, talk and do anything which is related to these our created demi-gods.media is simply marketing for its trp and thereby minting money.i wonder how many of us are bothered for our protectors !given a chance most of the indians wud opt for a page three atten-dance rather than attending a martyrs funeral .its a shame, but true.our mindsets need a radical change.till then we can keep blaming media.

KANAK,you have made your point so very effectively.I couldnt agree with you more.
recently when "raju srivastav's" shorts were pulled down by the gals in the house of "big boss",one of the news channel aired the same scene over and over again for a duration of 30 minutes(they were telecasting a special programme on it).At the end of the show I started liking raju's ass. Some news channels are disgusting.I guess the print/television media needs to do a lot of introspection.

A VERY RELEVANT TOPIC TO BE DISCUSSED.WHENEVER, A PROMINENT PERSONALITY IS KILLED EITHER IN AN ACCIDENT OR WHEN HE BECOMES A VICITM OF ATTACKS,MEDIA HIGHLIGHTS EVERY MINUTE DETAILS OF HIM AND HIS FAMILY.BUT THE EFFORTS OF COPS WHO ACCOMPANY HIM AND PROTECT HIM GET UNNOTICED.IT IS REALLY PATHETIC.EXCELLENT BLOG,KANAK!

ANUPAMA THANK YOU FOR READING AND COMMENTING !

I agree to your comprehensive account . Its all about money laundering and now WE THE PEOPLE ARE resigned to the fact that so long as politicians are deivering the goods ( SEEMINGLY SO), looting the aam aadmi is acceptable !!!
Our acceptance levels vis a vis corruption have risen manyfold. Earlier, onE kept the LOOT under wraps, now everyone is flaunting it. We see it in thelavish WEDDINGS/ designer Birthday Parties/Expensive foreign educatn/Switzerland honeymoons...what have you.

The definition of HONESTY has undergone a sea change - the one who accpets bribes and yet gets the ball moving, is the HONEST person - be it a Policeman/Politician/ Bureaucrat
Coming to the Police, its all commission bazi and no policeman is going to pay from his own pocket to please the top bosses hence the rupee moves from the SI level right upto the TOP BRASS
SOCIAL REVOLUTION IS ARRIVING -THERE IS HOPE - HOWEVER IT WILL TAKE TIME- A LOTTA TIME :)

We the people need a social revolution.
I agree , you raise very good points.
Policemen are not paid well, because the money is going to the politicians fat bank account-- swiss bank.

IT IS 1456 BILLION DOLLARS.
i EVEN CAN'T COUNT THAT MUCH!!!
Black Money In Swiss Bank

Swiss Banking Association report 2006

by Naman Sood on Apr 15, 2008 01:44 PM

Deposits in Banks located in the territory of Switzerland by nationals of following countries

Top 5

India---- $1456 billion
Russia----- $470 billion
UK-------- $390 billion
Ukraine $100 billion
China------ $96 billion

Now do the math India with $1456 billion or $1.4 trillion has more money in Swiss banks than rest of the world COMBINED.
Public loot since 1947: Let us bring back our money

It is one of the biggest loots witnessed by mankind -- the loot of the aam aadmi (common man) since 1947 by his brethren occupying public office.

It has been orchestrated by politicians, bureaucrats and some businessmen. The list is almost all-encompassing. No wonder, everyone in India loots with impunity and without any fear.

What is even more depressing in that this ill-gotten wealth of ours has been stashed away abroad into secret bank accounts located in some of the world's best known tax havens. And to that extent the Indian economy has been striped of its wealth.

Ordinary Indians may not be exactly aware of how such secret accounts operate and what are the rules and regulations that go on to govern such tax havens. However, one may well be aware of 'Swiss bank accounts,' the shorthand for murky dealings, secrecy and of course pilferage from developing countries into rich developed ones.

In fact, some finance experts and economists believe tax havens to be a conspiracy of the western world against the poor countries. By allowing the proliferation of tax havens in the twentieth century, the western world explicitly encourages the movement of scarce capital from the developing countries to the rich.

In March 2005, the Tax Justice Network (TJN) published a research finding demonstrating that $11.5 trillion of personal wealth was held offshore by rich individuals across the globe. The findings estimated that a large proportion of this wealth was managed from some 70 tax havens.

Further, augmenting these studies of TJN, Raymond Baker -- in his widely celebrated book titled Capitalism's Achilles Heel: Dirty Money and How to Renew the Free Market System -- estimates that at least $5 trillion have been shifted out of poorer countries to the West since the mid-1970s. It is further estimated by experts that one per cent of the world's population holds more than 57 per cent of total global wealth, routing it invariably through these tax havens. How much of this is from India is anybody's guess.

What is to be noted here is that most of the wealth of Indians parked in these tax havens is illegitimate money acquired through corrupt means. Naturally the secrecy associated with the bank accounts in such places is central to the issue, not their low tax rates as the term 'tax havens' suggests. Remember Bofors and how India could not trace the ultimate beneficiary of those transactions because of the secrecy associated with these bank accounts?

Our safeguards don't have their life gaurds. In my state Chhattisgarh around 10 people including police cops are gunned everday.
Actually we dont respect police.

Arms are always poor, good training is not available.

check this for roadside bombs.
